Samuel Wong, President of the Global Music Healing Institute, delivered the 2008 Carlos Perez-Mesa, MD, Lectureship in Medical Humanities about his research in music medicine. Wong believes that music heals.

Wong is a pianist and a doctor, and wants to take music out of the “New Age voodoo” category and give it a firm basis in science.

Is music just a comfort and distraction, or does it truly have the power to heal? This subject is so much in the news these days that the Journal of the San Francisco Medical Society dedicated its March issue entirely to the subject of Music and Medicine.

With roots in the study of mental illness, music therapy has extended to the fields of neurology, pain management, developmental delays, and Alzheimer’s and dementia. Current research is linking music therapy to effects on physical health and wellness.
