What to expect from your first Relaxation Massage

woman receiving a relaxing massage treatmentFirst, you can expect your relaxation massage to be a gentle, superficial pressure on and manipulation of surface tissues of your body. This will not be a deep, penetrating muscle massage. If a relaxation massage is what you want, then read on to learn more about what to expect.

Find a massage therapist willing to customize the session to your desires. Usually you will be asked to remove all or most of your clothing and lie on a massage table with a thin sheet covering your body. The massage takes place in a warm, quiet, comforting environment, usually with your choice of soothing music, aromatic oils, candles, curtains drawn closed, and dim lighting.

Many massage therapists will let you bring your own favorite music to your session, and many are also always on the lookout for suggestions of music to add to their selection. Some of my customers have written to me about their choices from my music that have added to their massage therapy experience:

“I heard the CD “When You Wish Upon A Star” at my massage therapist’s.  She played it for me one day.  I fell in love with it… and got the website address off the package.” - Cynthia Taylor

“…I now have my own private massage practice. “Fragrances of a Dream” more than any other music I use has the most effect on my clients and me. I am NOT a healer but a bodyworker. The rhythm and tone of this music touches my soul and heart allowing me to relax and pass that onto my clients. . I observe my clients let out that “deep sigh” of tension release within five minutes of the session starting when your music is on. No other music does that as quickly.” - Rebecca Brown

“Daniel, I’m a massage therapist and I’ve been using this CD (Going Home Again) during sessions with some of my clients. It’s interesting to notice their response. I think because the pieces are ones we recognize in a deeply emotional space in us, it speaks of home… and love…  People become very engaged with the music and it does help them let go of “thinking” and just rest.” - Pat Peterson

A relaxation massage should be whatever makes YOU feel comfortable and relax, so consult with your therapist to determine what works for you. If you prefer to remain more clothed, need a warmer room, softer music, particular scented oils, or a deeper or gentler touch, your therapist should be open to taking your suggestions.

A relaxation massage can benefit you because it is time taken out of your busy life to do something just for yourself. If you need to close your eyes and just relax, tell your therapist that. If you need to talk and give feedback, be sure to do so.

Everyone is comfortable at a different temperature, with different music or with silence, with or without massage oils, etc. One benefit of massage oils is that there is less friction and pulling on the skin. The massage goes right into the tissues without any skin irritation. Unscented oils should be available also.

A relaxation massage can be a pampering experience as well as beneficial to circulation, range of movement, minor muscle discomfort, and peace of mind. Until you’ve tried one, you have no idea what you are missing!
