Kim Ogden-Avrutik, Dr.P.H., is what is known as an animal communicator. She consults privately with pets and owners, using her ability to pose an owner’s questions or concerns to the animal. She then intuitively hears, feels or sees what the animal is communicating or experiencing and has helped hundreds of pet owners solve problems and deal with concerns.

Dr. Kim has created a CD, “Songs to Make Dogs Happy” in cooperation with Laurel Canyon Animal Company and has researched the songs and music with 214 canines. According to her research, 93% of dogs surveyed want to hear that their “human companion loves me”, 93% want to hear a song about “having a dog bed”, 92% want to “tell my human I love them”, 87% want to hear a song about a toy, 87% want to hear a song about eating food, and 75% want to hear a song about playing outside.

The test population represented canines of both sexes, many ages and varied breeds from geographical locations across the US and Canada. Dr. Kim, a musician herself and member of the Chicago Songwriter’s Collective, started with topics from her own research, wrote some of the lyrics herself, and reviewed and edited all of the lyrics for content and feasibility of mental and emotional comfort to the dog.

The music for the song’s lyrics were then recorded and Dr. Kim then used canine focus groups to test and adjust the lyrics and music accordingly. Testimonials attest to the success dog owners have had with adjusting their pets’ behaviors in stressful situations, such as pre-surgery, during thunderstorms, and when left alone at home all day long. Behavior changes include everything from “dog smiles”, tail wagging and licking the CD player, to alertness, calmness, and no longer tearing things up and strewing garbage when left home alone. Barking dogs no longer bark, and the list goes on.
