An American Christian hymn dating from about 1780, the lyrics and first publishing are credited to John Newton (1725-1800), a slave trader who later became a writer of hymns. The origins of the melody are unknown. Some believe it to be related to several 18th century secular Scottish folk songs. Others suggest it was a melody brought to America by African slaves. In this arrangement, a Gospel introduction underscores the popularity and adaptability of this hymn with it's varied styles of the American musical experience. A contemporary harmonization, with Celtic and Coplandesque shadings, follows.
