This melody comes from the tradition of the Yiddish musical theater and has become a well-known Jewish folk song. Recorded by many artists in the mid-1960s, the most popular recording is that of Joan Baez. Although the lyrics tell a sad tale, this soulful song releases into a comforting refrain:
